Adele, the British singer, has not been shy when sharing her love for all things nineties. However, is the Titanic fan a nineties baby?

No, Adele was not born in the 90s. Her birthday is May 5, 1988. This means that although she was not born in the 90s, she grew up under every single 90s influence imaginable. From boy bands and girl groups like Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls to the video game Rayman, Adele’s childhood was truly 90s nostalgic.

You can read more about Adele’s 90s childhood and the influences it has had on her below.

What Did the 90s Look Like for Kids?

The 90s were a weird time to be growing up. Things like pogs, tamagotchis, and pokemon cards were the fad toys. Pop-Tarts were the coolest breakfast food and everyone was drinking SunnyD. Hubba-Bubba bubblegum came in a circular package and it was called Bubble Tape.

Pop groups had true reign of the world of Top 40 with Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys topping the charts. Toward the end of the decade groups like S-Club 7 and Aqua were big. Who could forget the song Barbie Girl by the Danish pop group Aqua. A song that all kids growing up in the 90s sang without any of them actually knowing what the lyrics really meant. Then the fascination with rap seemed to take over. Marshall Mathers, also known as Eminem, broke out with  his alter ego Slim Shady and every kid was singing will the real Slim Shady please stand up.

It seemed like every family owned a Playstation, N64, or Sega. Kids were introduced to James Bond films again with Pierce Brosnan playing the MI5 spy. Then pretty much every single kid was playing the spy at home in the popular 90s N64 game based on the movie GoldenEye. If you didn’t have the game, you still played it at your friend’s house. To this day most 90s kids hail it as one of the best games of their childhood.

Adele’s 90s Influences

Growing up in a time like the above, it’s pretty clear that Adele would have picked up some big time influences. Like most young girls growing up in the 90s one thing in particular ruled her world: the idea of girl power and the Spice Girls. Most girls had their VHS copy of Spice World playing on repeat and Adele was probably one of them.

On top of the famous British pop group, Adele was also a huge fan of the movie Titanic. For her 30th birthday, the Rolling in the Deep singer had a Titanic themed birthday party. In the film, actress Kate Winslet, playing Rose, wears a stunning gown for a party with her love interest Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. As you can see in her Instagram post, Adele had the dress recreated and wore it for the party.

Adele’s Favorite 90s Group

It should come as no surprise that Spice Girls is Adele’s favorite 90s group. She even told Vogue magazine “the Spice Girls blew up when I was seven. And seeing them coming from a humble background — there was hope in it. It was really a massive part of my life when the whole Girl Power thing happened.” That can be said for a lot of 90s girls.

Adele loves the group so much that she has even covered some of their songs in concert. She also attended their concert in London in 2019, getting her drink on with the group backstage. To top it all off, she sang along to the famous Spice Girls song Wannabe when she was on carpool karaoke with James Corden.
