Sugar Ray Leonard was born on May 17th, 1956 in Wilmington, North Carolina. He relocated to Washington, D.C. with his family when he was three and settled in Palmer Park, Maryland when he was ten. Leonard was known as a shy child during his high school years and preferred to stay at home with his dog and read comics. Despite this, he was an excellent student and never had any issues at school, according to his mother.

Sugar Ray Leonard began boxing in 1969 after being inspired by his older brother Roger. He competed in the Eastern Olympic Trials and caught the attention of the Olympic Team assistant coach, who called him “sweet as sugar.” Leonard became known as “Sugar Ray” and went on to win the National Golden Gloves Lightweight and Light Welterweight Championships. In 1976, he won a gold medal as the light welterweight representative of the United States at the Olympics.

Leonard later revealed in his autobiography that he had been sexually abused as a child by two different men, and he now encourages other victims to come forward. After the Olympics, he turned professional to support his family and trained with Angelo Dundee, who had trained Muhammad Ali. But, he had yet another comeback in 1986 when he fought Marvin Hagler, earning a minimum of $11 million. He won that fight in a controversial split-decision.

In 1991, Leonard fought Terry Norris in what he claimed would be his final match, but he came out of retirement five years later at the age of 40 to fight Hector Camacho. Unfortunately, he was knocked out for the first time in his career, and Leonard decided to retire for good.
