Luke Fickell is moving to Madison, Wisconsin, to take over the Wisconsin Badgers program less than a day after learning he won’t be able to coach the University of Cincinnati football team to a third consecutive American Athletic Conference championship.

The 49-year-old Ohio State alum, former Buckeyes player, and longtime assistant are expected to be named Wisconsin’s next head coach as early as Sunday, according to sources who confirmed that Fickell and Wisconsin had reached an agreement.

Paul Chryst, fired mid-season after posting a 67-26 record over eight seasons, is being replaced by Fickell. The defensive coordinator for the Badgers, Jim Leonhard, was a candidate for the head coaching position after a 4-3 record as an interim coach.

According to UW Athletics Director Chris McIntosh, Luke Fickell earns an average of $7.9 million annually as the school’s head football coach.

At the University of Cincinnati, where Fickell held the same position, his salary began at $1.9 million in 2017 and increased to $5 million annually on a contract extended through 2028. This represents a pay raise of almost 60%.

Cincinnati’s contract buyout will cost $3.5 million.
