Critically acclaimed artist Hannah Scott is gearing up for the release of her brand new album ‘Pieces Of The Night’ which will be dropping on June 22nd. The LP signals happier times ahead for the British singer who has a had a tough time recently, following the diagnosis of a form of arthritis which causes severe joint pain and fatigue, which has affected her ability to perform live.
Here we speak exclusively to Hannah Scott about her return to music, diagnosis, future plans and more;
Your new album will be released June 22nd, what can fans expect from the record?
I think this record is a big step up from what’s come before it in terms of writing, sound and performance. We worked really hard to get the songs right before going into the studio, I’ve worked on my vocals and my creative partner and producer, Stefano, has come so far with his production and has made the songs sound amazing.
What is the main inspiration behind the LP?
I would say these are honest songs about the human condition and human connection in an increasingly hectic world. These are songs inspired by family, hope, self-belief.
What is the one song you are most excited for fans to hear?
If I have to pick one, it is probably ‘No Gravity’. It was a track we battled with, both lyrically and in terms of production, even though the music was written pretty quickly. When I heard the final mix I felt like it really represented me and where I am at right now. I hope people will like it as much as I do!
How would you describe the overall sound of the album?
I’d describe the music as “contemporary folk” and the production combines organic, live elements with electronica.
You’re also touring soon, after being forced to take a break due to your arthritis diagnosis, how excited are you to be back on the road?
To be honest, I never stopped, though perhaps I should have. I’m not very good at stopping! I am trying to pace myself though so I don’t burn out with the forthcoming gigs and festivals – I’m busier than I’ve ever been…
Your condition is obviously painful, but you’re not letting it affect your career, how do you remain positive in tough times?
I try very hard to remain focused on the good things that have come from it. When I first became unwell I was doing a job I didn’t enjoy and had to stop because I couldn’t manage the hours or commute and I’m now doing work I enjoy much more. I am also healthier and fitter because one of the most important things to maintain my joints flexible is exercise! I also remember I’m lucky that it hasn’t stopped me doing what I love – it’s a good job I wasn’t a ballerina or a footballer!
So, What can fans expect from your live shows?
Our album launch in London on June 21st will be a little different from previous live shows which have been mainly acoustic with me on guitar and Stefano on cello. You’ll have to come along to see why!
What would be your message to other people suffering with arthritis?
Erm, probably to pace yourself! Don’t try and do a million things on your better days because you’ll only end up destroying yourself for the next week. If only I could take my own advice!
Along with new music and tour what else can we expect from you this year?
That’s already quite a lot for me ;) We have a music video coming out after the album and I think we’ll probably get our heads down in the autumn and start writing some new material.
