Robin Boyd’s iconic 1954 ‘Bridgford House’ is up for rent, giving mid-century enthusiasts the chance to live in one of Melbourne’s best designs on a budget.

The four-bedroom house at 242 Beach Rd, Black Rock, is listed for $1200 a week through Jellis Craig’s Oscar Sturm, having last sold for $2,820,005 in 2018.

It’s owned by people who appreciate it: Melbourne University architecture lecturer Catherine Duggan and her hospitality player partner Maz Salt, who owns popular haunts Ferdydurke, Section 8 and The B.East.

Melbourne rents hit grim new record high to start 2023

How will the rental market fare in 2023?

Mr Sturm said the property would appeal to “someone who appreciated that sort of really intricate architectural design” and would likely rent to a couple or family.

The house was constructed for shipping agent Charles Haig Bridgford and his wife, Phyllis.

Despite being close to the beach, the site had no attractive outlook, inspiring Boyd to design the house to have self-contained views, according to its heritage listing.

“Occupying the majority of the corner site, Boyd’s design comprised a low-lying rectangular brick structure with a low-pitched roof form that spanned almost the full width of the site,” it states.

“Louvred pergolas to the northern elevation shaded a private garden that ran the full length of the site’s northern boundary with every room overlooking this garden through expansive glazing.

“This created the impression that the living spaces and garden were ‘virtually one’, and allowed for the enhanced flow of natural light.”

The property is open for inspection this Saturday, January 14.
