Just announced Frozen is heading to Broadway in Spring 2018!

Disney had previously announced plans for their 2013 hit claiming they wanted excellence and we’re not pushing for a date. The day has come…sort of. Yesterday Disney made their big announcement. The show will begin out of town production in an unannounced theatre starting summer 2017. Previous places for these try outs by Disney have been Seattle and most recently New Jersey for a failed Hunchback Of Notre Dam production.

The creative team for Frozen is as follows from a press release from Disney:

“As previously announced, Frozen features music and lyrics by creators of the film score
Kristen Anderson-Lopez (In Transit, Up Here) and Robert Lopez (Avenue Q, The Book of
Mormon, Up Here) and a book by Jennifer Lee (Wreck-It Ralph), the film’s screenwriter and
director (with Chris Buck). Frozen won 2014 Oscars® for Best Song (“Let It Go”) and Best
Animated Feature.

Golden Globe Award and Obie winner and two-time Tony Award® nominee Alex Timbers
(Peter and the Starcatcher, Here Lies Love, Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle) is Frozen’s director and
Tony-winner Peter Darling (Billy Elliot, Matilda) is choreographer.

The design team for Frozen includes scenic and costume design by seven-time Tony Award
winner Bob Crowley (Mary Poppins, The Coast of Utopia, An American in Paris), lighting design
by five-time Tony Award winner Natasha KaK (Aladdin, An American in Paris, The Glass
Menagerie) and sound design by four-time Tony nominee Peter Hylenski (The ScoLsboro Boys,
Motown, After Midnight).
Two-time Tony Award winner Stephen Oremus (Avenue Q, Wicked, The Book of Mormon) is
music supervisor and creates vocal and incidental arrangements.”

Other than that, Disney keeps stating more information will be announced at a later time.

Disney has had a long history with Broadway. Currently Aladdin (see our review here) and The Lion King are gracing Broadway stages. The two along with Newsies are embarking or are on a nationwide tour in America.

Disney started on Broadway in 1994 with Beauty and the Beast. The show had an impressive thirteen year run and has included multiple celebrity castings.

Disney continued to spawn hits like King David, Aida, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid and Mary Poppins.

The biggest hit to date, has been The Lion King. The production won a massive SIX Tony awards and is the third longest running Broadway show ever. The show has welcomes over 80 MILLION visitors worldwide.

We have a pretty keen feeling Frozen will do equally, if not better than that.

Disney has been producing massive hits to Broadway in the past four years with Peter and the Starcatcher, Newsies and Aladdin, which garnished a total of eight Tony awards.

That in an of itself, plus Disney signed a 99 year lease in 1997 with the 42nd Street Development Project to renovate and the New Amsterdam Theatre. King David, Mary Poppins and currently Aladdin have been produced there.

Disney is not going anywhere from Broadway!

If you can’t wait until 2018 to see Frozen, be sure to catch The Lion King, Newsies and Aladdin on tour in a city near you.
